Student Insurance

Welcome to the ST. Lawrence University 2007-2008 Student Health Insurance Site

St. Lawrence University, through Niagara National (www.niagaranational.com), representing Markel Insurance Company, provides a comprehensive Student Health Insurance Plan for all St. Lawrence students. This policy runs from August 15, 2007 through August 14, 2008 and the cost is $1,350. A Spring/Summer enrollment is offered from 1/15/08 to 8/14/08.

The plan has a one time $50 deductible, which is reduced to $25 if referred by the SLU Health Center. Coverage is 100% up to the first $1,000; from $1,000 up to $5,000 coverage is on a coinsurance 80%/20% basis; from $5,000 up to the maximum of $75,000 coverage is again at 100%. Prescriptions are covered up to $1,500 per cause per year with a $5 deductible per prescription paid by the participant.

The health insurance coverage is worldwide and will provide benefits at the University, at home, while traveling or while participating in sports, including Intercollegiate sports.

Medical evacuation, repatriation and travel assistance is also provided to all participating students.

All students, undergraduate and graduate, are eligible for this plan, and, if needed, dependent coverage can be added.

All full time graduate and undergraduate students at ST. Lawrence University are automatically enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Plan.

If a student already has equivalent comprehensive coverage providing benefits in the Canton, New York area, a waiver form must be completed after January 4, 2008 to eliminate this charge from the student account. Requests for waivers must be submitted each academic year.

For NCAA Intercollegiate Athletes: The NCAA requires all athletes to have a minimum of $75,000 of health insurance for athletic related injuries. Your automatic enrollment in the SLU Student Health Insurance plan provides sufficient coverage - If you elect to waive enrollment in the SLU Student Health Insurance Plan and do not have sufficient coverage in your current insurance policy, you will not be able to participate in any NCAA sanctioned events, including practices, until such evidence of sufficient coverage is provided.

You warrant that the information you provide in this waiver is true and accurate. You authorize Niagara National, Inc. on behalf of ST. Lawrence University, to validate your waiver. This includes, but is not limited to, contacting your existing insurance carrier in an effort to determine that valid, in-force coverage exists. If it is later determined that you have provided inaccurate information, your waiver may be voided and charges for the student insurance plan may be returned to your student account billing statement.

You may waive the Student Health Insurance Plan by clicking on the "Continue" button below and completing the online waiver process. This will be the fastest way to have the insurance charge removed from your student bill. If you do not have equivalent comprehensive coverage while you are at school, you will not be allowed to waive. Please take a few minutes to review your current policy and make sure you are adequately covered. If you are not sure, please contact your current insurance carrier.

Many HMOs provide limited coverage for students traveling away from their service area and most employer plans will not cover dependents beyond a certain age (for instance turning 19 or 21).

You may wish to consider the following even if you have other coverage:

  • If your current insurance is through an HMO or preferred provider network out of the Canton-Potsdam area, services locally may be limited. Covered charges under your current plan may be billed to you at a higher, non-preferred rate. Many students have found it challenging to use their HMO coverage in the Canton-Potsdam area.
  • Your current insurance may not cover the types of expenses most frequently incurred by college age individuals, such as outpatient referrals, or may cover them only after a deductible or co-payment. This plan helps cover those expenses. It may even be used to supplement or compliment a family plan.
  • Coverage through parent's policy may end on a student's birthday (i.e. at age 19, 23, or 25), even if a full-time student.
  • Coverage is available for eligible dependent children and spouses.
  • This policy will cover a student at home, while participating in a sport, at the University or while traveling internationally.
  • The policy will cover a student from 8/15/07 to 8/14/08 with a maximum benefit up to $75,000 (an optional rider is available during fall enrollment only (additional charge applies), which will increase coverage to $250,000 - details are found inside the brochure).
  • Prescriptions are covered after a $5 deductible per prescription, up to a maximum of $1,500 per accident or sickness.
  • Will you be a graduating senior? If so, you will also be offered a continuation plan prior to graduation.
  • The plan offers Spring/Summer enrollment from 1/15/08 to 8/14/08.
  • Participating doctors, hospitals, and pharmacies may file claims electronically

Many important items are covered in the brochure (click link above to view). Health insurance is a very important aspect of a college student's life. It can take years to recover from unpaid medical bills. This plan will pay a student's medical expenses if they are sick or injured as long as it is medically necessary.
