Welcome to the SUNY Potsdam Student Health Insurance Website

Please take a few minutes to review your current policy and make sure you are adequately covered. If you are not sure, please contact your current insurance carrier.

Many HMOs provide limited coverage for students traveling away from their service area and most employer plans will not cover dependents beyond a certain age (for instance turning 19 or 21).

You may wish to consider the following even if you have other coverage:

    • If your current insurance is through an HMO or preferred provider network out of the Canton-Potsdam area, services locally may be limited. Covered charges under your current plan may be billed to you at a higher, non-preferred rate. Many students have found it challenging to use their HMO coverage in the Canton-Potsdam area.
    • Your current insurance may not cover the types of expenses most frequently incurred by college age individuals, such as outpatient referrals, or may cover them only after a deductible or co-payment. This plan helps cover those expenses. It may even be used to supplement or compliment a family plan.
    • Coverage through parent's policy may end on a student's birthday (i.e. at age 19, 23, or 25), even if a full-time student.
    • Coverage is available for eligible dependent children and spouses.
    • This policy will cover a student at home, at the College or while traveling internationally.
    • The policy will cover a student from 8/23/09 to 8/22/10 with a maximum benefit up to $75,000 (an optional rider is available, for an additional charge, which will increase coverage to $250,000 - details are found inside the brochure).
    • Prescriptions are covered after a $10 generic/$25 brand/$40 non-formulary co-pay per prescription, up to a maximum of $300 per year
    • Will you be a graduating senior? If so, you will also be offered a continuation plan prior to graduation.
    • The plan offers Spring/Summer enrollment from 1/1/10 to 8/22/10.
    • Participating doctors, hospitals, and pharmacies may file claims electronically
  • Many important items are covered in the brochure (click link above to view). Health insurance is a very important aspect of a college student's life. It can take years to recover from unpaid medical bills. This plan will pay a student's medical expenses if they are sick or injured as long as it is medically necessary.
